No cloud, no light, and a drive of two hours at most. Quad bikes and camels at sunset, dinner at a camp, then somebody puts a green laser on Orion. The cheapest dark sky anybody sells.

A full moon washes the Milky Way out completely, which is why the dark-sky outfits sell their new-moon dates first and some cancel the rest. Summit trips run near freezing whatever the coast is doing. And the bright core of the galaxy is a season, not a constant: roughly March to October up north, February to October in the south.

Beaches and ruins are everywhere. A galaxy centre bright enough to throw a shadow, rings in a sixteen-inch mirror, and two satellite galaxies hanging off the southern Milky Way are not.
The Milky Way Core
From roughly March to October the bright middle of our own galaxy climbs clear of the horizon, and somewhere properly dark it is bright enough to throw a faint shadow on pale ground. A phone will not hold it, which is why these tours carry a tripod and a fast lens and hand you the files afterwards. Outside the season you get the fainter outer arm and a lot of talk about what comes back in spring.

Saturn, and the Moon
No screen prepares anyone for Saturn as a small hard ring in a sixteen-inch mirror, or for Jupiter with four dots in a line beside it. The moon is the other one: catch it at first quarter and the craters along the terminator throw shadows you can measure. The irony is that the nights that show the moon best are the worst nights for everything else.
